A Tale of Two Sisters | Arcane Vi and Jinx's Character Study
Family is one of the most important themes in Arcane and it's a constant struggle to keep that connection against the changing environment. For Vi and Jinx (Powder), it's a solar flare that you can't stare at directly or else be blind to the depressing conclusion. Can they mend what was broken in their past?

    Jinx in S1 has serious abandonment issues which makes sense given her childhood trauma is first losing her parents at an extremely young age and then again losing her family and then her sister outright "abandoning" her after a mistake. Several psychotherapists have commented on her freak out in S1E2 is very much a reflection of the deep seated issues even back then. In that context, Caitlyn or really any threat of being abandoned is absolutely in her head. But then we get the death of Silco. Season 2 strongly implies that when she accepted Jinx in S1E9, she accepted that she's the problem. She is being abandoned because she destroys anything that gets close. Killing Silco was the thing that shifted it. And strangely, it puts her in a calmer place. A more depressed place, but we see only one true bout of psychosis (after Isha is captured) and she doesn't really hate Caitlyn by that point. It's not about Vi choosing between Caitlyn or Jinx, Jinx is unworthy of it. Then she gets Isha, she gets to rebuild part of her family with the return of Vander and starts rebuilding her relationship with Vi. And then Isha dies and Vander goes feral and she's back to her original conclusion: Jinx is a curse. She has only one relationship remaining and that's Vi and she doesn't want to see Vi destroyed so she ends their relationship first. She "frees" Vi of the responsibility of trying to make Jinx loved when Jinx is cursed to never be loved.

    Great commentary! I love your take on Jinx and Vi’s relationship. I think this theme can be pretty well summed up in hallucination Silco’s monologue to Jinx in ep8. The idea that, even though familial love is a powerful force, sometimes it is not enough for the circumstances and all one can do is “walk away” to let things heal. That’s what Jinx realizes and, although she initially sees this as a “I’m just gonna die then”, it’s Ekko who convinces her that she does not need to die to start over that she can “start something new”. I honestly wish Riot would have made it more clear that Jinx lived that way the message would itself be more clear.

    His talk with Ambessa in ep 8 really fucked his whole character. It was so annoying. Because he tells her that making dead robots was"always his plan". When act 2 showed a complex arc that took him from "I'd rather go powerless than sacrifice humanity" to"These actions have shown me that humanity is wrong" Almost as if act 3 did not watch act 2 Also I do not believe Viktor would ever side with a warmongerer.

      viktor is only siding with ambessa because he believes that he is acheiving perfection, the hex-core blinds viktor to his humanity (sky leaving him and saying he won't miss her is evidence of this). Viktor's goal is to help people and reduce suffering, and by removing everyones humanity and connecting everyone he makes them all one. But when all is one, everyone is alone and viktor doesn't understand this until ekko breaks through to him and wakes up his human side. When he says it was always his plan, he means that it was always his plan to help people. What he understands as helping people changes over time as his empathy is removed by the arcane magic

    Personally. I think people are too hard on LoL Victor. He wants to produce machines to help people survive zaunn. He developed blitzcrank with that very idea in mind since i believe it was a rescue robot, hence grab hand and turbo speed. Victors entire thing is devolping robotic prosthetics to replace parts that are easily damaged in zaun like iron lungs to combat the rampant pollution.

    Before finishing the video, as someone who liked Viktor and his lore before Arcane, I think Viktors lore had more to it and Arcane kinda sacrificed that in favour of Jayce. Viktor starts his work as a child, not with Singed, but by improving the factories in Zaun, with the goal and succiding in reducing the frequent accidents that happened in them to near zero and along with that the casualties and deaths. Viktor also doesn't experiment on himself because he's dying, he does it because he believes he can't expect others to trust him, if he doesn't show it work on himself. The concept of the glorious evolution comes from the idea if you could have your body and mind work better why wouldn't you? Viktor helped and saved countless people. While there's more to it, the main change is that in his og lore, while his ideas were flawed and a lot of people would disagree with them, there was sound logic behind them and you could argue for his case. They made Viktors glorious evolution just clearly, classically bad with creating effectively drones out of people at his command and remove any of the real discussion of his character and beliefs.

    • @luckas221a
      @luckas221a 2 месяца назад

      I don’t believe Viktor’s initial idea was to assimilate and neutralize. Only when he saw humanity’s natural inclination for conflict, when Jayce tried to destroy him, did he actually turn “evil”

    • @r.babylon2885
      @r.babylon2885 2 месяца назад

      It wasn't that they were drones. It was that they became a hive mind. Their consciousness ascended, and when connected, there'd be no misunderstanding, or war. But when ascended, and a part of Viktor, they have no need of bodies or food. But it's lonely, especially when only Viktor has the immortal body. At least, that's what I got from it.

      It really upsets me that people who FUCKING HAVEN'T read Viktor's lore rag on it. The fact he takes on the burden of his technology on himself to prove its legitimate allowing him to further push it forward is brilliant writing. It's also amazing by raising genuine moral dilemmas, like for divers is the risk of dying afraid worth not sacrificing your autonomy even if it is temporarily to complete a job. Is losing any bit of autonomy worth the money? Was it better for people to die or be saved in a mechanical body that loses emotion. It is miles more nuance than his Arcane version where he is just evil with twisted good intentions. Sure it's a good story, just a bad Viktor story. I adore the incarnations of his old lore where is not quiet a hero but not quiet a villain, just a complexed inventory trying to solve difficult problems with questionable solutions.

    What I find so interesting about listening to people try to talk about one piece and politics is that there is so much nuance in this work, there are so many different examples of essentially whatever you want to find. Even among the Celestial Dragons, you can find people who are genuinely good and well-meaning. Personally, I try to look at all fictional stories as explorations of ideas rather than explicit political statements. I do this because, while admittedly not super good at it, I really enjoyed my hand at fictional writing when I was younger, and one of the joys of it was the freedom to explore ideas without any real limit or consequence. You could have read some of my stories and walk away with assumptions about me that were completely opposite to the truth. Just like an actor reveling in playing a villain, or someone taking the Evil route in an RPG that allows for such things. In that regard, I genuinely don't care what Oda's actual politics are. He has written a story that has incredible diversity when it comes to themes, references, and exploration of characters, and ideas. You could say that Oda is anti-authoritarian, but then you'd have to explain all the good representations of monarchs and leaders. You could argue that he advocates for peaceful solutions and is against war, but then you'd have to explain how essentially every conflict is solved by punching the bad guys into submission. You could say that he's in favor of royal lineage, but then you have to contend with how Dalton was essentially forced by the population to become leader of the Sakura kingdom. You have emphasis on genetic lineage and genetic familial bonds, but you also have emphasis on the opposite. You have scenes showing how easy it is for members of an oppressed group to themselves become the oppressors, or even vice versa. He's playing all over the place with the concept of inherent danger. It might be easy to quote Tom and say "just existing is not a sin" but you have to pair that with the reality of the destruction and misery caused by the weapons Franky created. That's just an example, as that topic alone has so much nuance and complexity you could probably write a whole essay on it. The whole story around Skypiea and Shandora and especially the story of Noland and Calgara is filled to the brim with examinations around the ideas of science vs religion vs culture. The numerous ways you can interpret that whole thing can lead you to so many different conclusions. Then there's the whole thing about the marines. It's the one area where you could argue that there's more of a clear direction, but I'd argue that's because the main characters are literally outlaws. The thing is there are plenty of examples of good and even great marines, and they and their sacrifices often go unnoticed and without fanfare in favor of the more bombastic ones that are usually of the less good variety. Because while the system is indeed corrupt at the top, there is also acknowledgement and examination of the idea that justice is different for everyone. Many join the marines with the wish to do good for the world, and while we don't directly see much of it (because our main cast is literally antagonists to the marines) it's still there. The marines sent several battleships to free Cocoyashi village, even with Nezumi there trying to quiet things down. Most of the men under Morgan were actually good, earnest people, as can be seen once Morgan was defeated. Most pirates are genuinely ruthless people who do horrible things, and the marines do put a stop to many of them. It's easy to forget, but Buggy basically razed an entire town for his own amusement and had no issues killing people. The Judge in the backstory of Water7 was genuinely going to pardon Tom for aiding the world's most notorious villain, according to the propaganda because of his service to the community and the government itself. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how vast the One Piece world is, just how many different people live there and how many different things are going on all the time. If you read One Piece and see a clear and obvious political message, I invite you to genuinely examine and challenge your own world view, and pay extra attention to things that you tend to disregard. On that note, I want to mention that I did actively disregard a lot of things that are already often mentioned, especially around just how corrupt the world government is, and the atrocities committed by the marines, but I felt it needed to highlight just some of the things that are often overlooked in order to show the staggering amount of nuance and complexity that actually exist in this story.

    41:25 yes because when people say politics they dont mean kings queens, soldiers, mayors ruling class, poverty etc and you know that and who people hate is the disingenuous and the token usage of minorities to cover the lack of competency of the writer, who made the entire point the "politics" and every thing else is second, and its added in such a way that causes the product to be worse example your video, every thing you said was well researched and well implemented the points are easy to understand and able to be expanded then at the end you had to add the real life "politics" of hey a black person in a movie is not bad yes every body knows that and no one is against that the problem is not politics is "politics" and you know the difference, and your video flow had to come to a screaming halt because you wanted to add that, now did this make this video bad, no, but it did make it worse now a good example is this video as well the palestine part even if some one has a different opinion over the conflict in this video it was implemented well and even more what side you are on does not matter because the point is the erasure of information wow you did "politics" well and bad in the same video and i hope this explains what is the problem

    The easiest way to summarise One Piece is anti authoritarian. Is your goal sunshine and puppies? Doesn't really matter if you're oppressing people to get there. The communist oppresses the bourgeoisie. Luffy isn't against the bourgeoisie, just the ones who abuse their power. The zealot oppresses the unbeliever. Luffy doesn't care about your beliefs, just that they don't trample on others. What he values is in fact, what he identifies with, is a will for freedom. Strive to be free and protect the freedom of others, you have Luffy's fist
